Employment History

7/2010 — Present

Technical Editor/Writer for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a NASA contractor. I build and edit proposals for space missions, in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These are confidential documents on state-of-the-art topics in science and technology. They must conform to strict NASA guidelines, and be ready on tight deadlines for demanding customers.

5/2007 — 7/2010

Writer for LA2DAY.com, a Los Angeles lifestyle web magazine. I write about computers, gadgets and technology in the website's "Toys" section. I wrote a column on the Writers' Guild strike and watching television on the web that got 10,000 hits, was one of their top ten most popular columns, and hit the front page of Digg.com.

5/2004 — 7/2008

Store Manager for iSold It on eBay, a "clicks 'n' mortar" store which sells customers items on eBay. I managed the creative team of photographers and writers who assembled the listings, learned software packages and trained the employees in its use, and interacted with customers. I wrote many listings and photographed many items myself. The store was the #1 eBay store in the country, with the highest per-item price and the highest total sales volume.

10/2003 — 5/2004

Production Lead for SM&A, a firm that builds bids for government contracts. Managed the production of 1,200-page proposal in Microsoft Word—worked with a team of six writers on a tight deadline, edited their copy and created 100 illustrations in Photoshop, Illustrator and PowerPoint. Negotiated with various print shops, and collaborated with the selected one to produce 90,000 pages over a 48-hour period.

8/2003 — 9/2003 and 7/2004 — 8/2004

PowerPoint design for Amgen, a biotech firm. Worked with Presentation Design department to prepare family of PowerPoint presentations for their annual sales meeting. Traveled to Chicago to support the conference participants on-site.

5/2000 — 9/2003

PowerPoint presentations and graphics for Tenet Healthcare. Brought to the Tenet Annual Leadership Conference in 2000 (Phoenix) and 2001 (San Diego), where I did on-site production of presentations. They were shown in meetings of thousands of doctors and hospital administrators. The process involved short deadlines and many last-minute changes. Throughout the rest of the year, creation of PowerPoint presentations and graphics, and maintenance of Tenet's map library in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, showing their hospitals' nationwide locations.

5/2000 — 3/2003

Lead Operator at Credit Suisse First Boston's Presentation Technology department. Managing a word processing/graphics center with a dozen employees. Testing, troubleshooting new software products and custom templates, and training operators. Managing the workflow, supervising the personnel and controlling the quality of hundreds of documents weekly. Answering operators' and bankers' questions about the software, hardware, document standards and templates.

1996 — 5/2000

Presentations and Graphics for Jefferies & Company, Inc. Design of financial prospectus and sales documents using Microsoft Office, CorelDRAW!, Photoshop, and other software. Software troubleshooter and template designer and tester.
